Stronger Together: How Community Transforms Mental Health

This Mental Health Awareness Week, Turning Point Scotland is celebrating the power of community; a lifeline for so many people on their mental health journey.
When we feel connected, supported and seen, our wellbeing can thrive. Community is more than just a word, it’s about belonging, purpose, and knowing you are not alone. This year’s theme, ‘Community’, reflects exactly what we’ve always believed at Turning Point Scotland: real recovery happens when people are empowered and supported by others.
Supporting Community, Saving Lives
In the heart of Glasgow, our Mental Health and Huntington’s service has been a vital source of connection and care for individuals facing complex challenges. Over the past year:
- 70 people were supported through person-centred, trauma-informed care
- Our dedicated team delivered over 24,000 hours of tailored support
- Staff successfully de-escalated 34 mental health crises
- 84 suicide interventions were carried out
These numbers reflect more than just outcomes. They reflect trust, compassion, and human connection.
A Voice for Community
Creativity and expression are powerful tools in recovery. An excerpt from a poem written by an individual connected to our Glasgow Mental Health and Huntington’s service captures what community and belonging means to them:
“From coffee shop corners to parks filled with light,
We share in our battles; we stand up and fight.
For mental health matters-it’s not just a phrase;
It’s a journey together through life’s winding maze.
So let’s celebrate bonds that make us feel whole,
The power of kindness that nurtures the soul.
In unity’s embrace, let our voices resound:
In community’s strength, true healing is found.”
Self-Care, Support and Belonging
Community care starts with self-care. At Glasgow Mental Health and Huntington’s service, we promote:
- Shared walks and creative groups to build social bonds
- Rest and reflection as part of recovery
- Nutritional and physical wellbeing as key pillars of support
- Access to peer support, counselling, and tailored care plans
And just as important, we remind everyone: it’s okay to ask for help.
Prioritising your mental health can transform every part of your life. From stronger relationships to improved wellbeing, self-esteem, and resilience. When you feel supported, connected, and part of a community, it becomes easier to manage stress, navigate challenges, and embrace your full potential.
At Turning Point Scotland, we believe that with the right support, everyone can experience greater confidence, purpose, and a deeper sense of happiness and fulfilment. This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s continue building communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.
